BERN, Switzerland — Britain wants better relations with Argentina but remains unprepared to negotiate over the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands, British Foreign Secretary Geoffrey Howe said on Friday.
“We have made very plain that Falklands sovereignty is not a subject for negotiation with Argentina. But we are very keen to improve diplomatic, trade and economic relations,” Howe said after talks with Swiss Foreign Minister Rene Felber.
Howe told reporters he had thanked Switzerland for representing Britain’s interests in Argentina. Diplomatic relations between London and Buenos Aires were broken off in 1982 because of Anglo-Argentine dispute over the Falklands.
