Two tall ships joined company off Newport Beach Friday as the revenue cutter California escorted the Coast Guard training ship Eagle on the beginning of the final leg of a 26,000-mile, six-month voyage.
The Eagle, which carries a crew of about 125 Coast Guard cadets, is returning from Australia, where she participated in that nation’s bicentennial celebration. Home port is New London, Conn.
On the voyage, the cadets have visited Colombia, Ecuador, Tahiti, Bora Bora, Tonga and Fiji, as well as five ports in Australia. On the horizon: Acapulco, the Panama Canal, Miami and home.
