DEL MAR — Johnny Cash and Smokey Robinson are among the latest acts signed to perform at the grandstand during this year’s Southern California Exposition, fair officials said last week.
Cash, the country-Western giant who made household names out of songs like “Folsom Prison Blues, “Ring of Fire” and “A Boy Named Sue,” will close the exposition, also known as the Del Mar Fair, with two performances July 4.
Robinson, a member of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame, is known for his falsetto singing and hit rhythm-and-blues songwriting. Since his 1960 first No. 1 hit, “Shop Around” with the Miracles, Robinson wrote or co-wrote such R&B; standards as “Don’t Mess with Bill,” “I’ll Be Doggone,” “Ain’t That Peculiar,” “The One Who Really Loves You,” “My Guy,” “My Girl,” and “The Way You Do the Things You Do.” He will perform June 29.
Other acts announced are country singer Lee Greenwood (June 25), pop crooner Bobby Vinton (June 19), country band Highway 101 (June 22), and a female trio called called Expose (June 20) that plays Latin-based dance music known as the Miami sound.
Previously announced entertainers for the fair are the rock groups REO Speedwagon (June 16), The Fabulous Thunderbirds (June 17) and The 30th Anniversary of Rock ‘n’ Roll” (July 3) consisting of 14 acts.
Eleven more entertainers will be announced for the June 16-July 14 fair.
