Local News in Brief : Council Race Still Even
- Share via
Two candidates for a seat on the Palos Verdes Estates City Council sat through a recount of the votes Monday, only to end up right where they started--in a tie.
Rita M. Bayer, 61, and Raymond D. Mattingly, 64, had wound up with 1,565 votes apiece after last Tuesday’s balloting. Both candidates agreed to a recount, which was conducted at the Lakewood office of the city’s election consultant, Martin and Chapman Co.
When the recount, which cost the city $300, was completed on Monday, Bayer and Mattingly each had 1,563 votes. Officials explained that each apparently lost a couple of ballots to “over-voting,” which can happen, for example, when someone asked to pick two candidates from a list picks three instead.
Since there is still a tie, the winner will be selected by lot at tonight’s City Council meeting.
