U.S. Drug Test Kickoff Barred

SAN FRANCISCO — A federal judge today prohibited the Reagan Administration from beginning random drug testing Monday of all 13,000 federal prison workers, a step toward testing in all federal agencies.
U.S. District Judge Stanley A. Weigel issued a temporary restraining order sought by the American Federation of Government Employees in a suit contending the prison testing program violates constitutional standards for searches. The order blocks the testing program at least until next Thursday, when a hearing is scheduled on a longer-lasting preliminary injunction. An injunction, if granted, could be appealed to a higher court.
