Freshman Cheryl Longeway threw a four-hit shutout Friday night as Kennedy High School of La Palma defeated La Mirada, 1-0, in the Southern Section 3-A softball finals at Mayfair Park in Lakewood.
Kennedy scored the only run of the game in the top of the sixth when Laurie Graper singled home Suzie Berdis.
Longeway struck out seven and improved her record to 23-3. The loss went to Dena Mullins (20-3), who was the winning pitcher Wednesday in La Mirada’s 1-0, 25-inning victory over Valencia of Placentia.
Kennedy finished 25-5, La Mirada 26-3.
In the 2-A game, Tiffany Boyd completed the year without allowing an earned run in 204 innings as Woodbridge of Irvine shut out Pacific Coast League rival Laguna Hills, 7-0.
Boyd struck out 13 and limited Laguna Hills to two hits in improving her record to 24-4. Boyd drove in the only run she would need with a two-out double in the first inning.
Woodbridge, which was declared 2-A co-champion with Laguna Hills last year when the teams failed to score a run in the 14-inning championship game, finished 25-6. The Hawks finished 20-10.
