Danish Prime Minister Poul Schlueter defused a North Atlantic Treaty Organization crisis by informing foreign envoys that the Danish government will not enforce Parliament’s tightening of a nuclear ban. Schlueter announced the move as he presented his new non-Socialist government to Parliament, nearly three weeks after the Conservative-led coalition collapsed in a dispute over the anti-nuclear issue. A Socialist majority passed a resolution April 17 ordering the government to uphold Denmark’s nuclear-free status. The United States and Britain objected because of their policy of refusing to confirm or deny the presence of nuclear weapons on their warships.
