The owners and operators of the New York theater district’s big houses filed suit Tuesday against the city to have the theaters’ landmark status revoked. The Shubert Organization, the Nederlander Organization, Jujamcyn Theaters and the League of American Theaters and Producers sued the city in order to remove a restrictive demolition and improvement procedure, instituted by the city, which the owners’ attorneys say has deprived the owners of $200-million worth of real estate potential. Ironically, the city instituted the landmark policy to prevent destruction of the theaters for non-theatrical building on the sites. The city refused to comment on the suit.
