Ian Alsen of Granada Hills High, one the nation’s top high school distance runners, has made a verbal commitment to attend Arkansas in the fall.
Alsen, the 1987 Kinney West regional cross-country champion, chose the Southwest Conference school Wednesday night over Indiana, Cal State Northridge, Arizona and San Diego State.
“I was just real impressed with the trip I took down there,” said Alsen, who expects to sign a letter of intent today. “They’re a real distance-oriented school and a very close-knit team. I was really impressed with their coach, John McDonnell.”
Alsen, 17, has personal bests of 3 minutes, 50 seconds in the 1,500 meters, 8:59.54 in the 3,200 meters and 1:56.0 in the 800.
