Britain’s biggest operatic spectacle--yet another monumental performance of Verdi’s “Aida”--became a temporary nightmare on its first night Sunday when soprano Grace Bumbry, singing the title role, pulled out at the end of the first act due to hay fever and tonsillitis. But Bulgarian soprano Ghena Dimitrova, alternating the role with Bumbry, was in the house and took over for Bumbry in Act II. The spectacular production features a cast of 600 singers, dancers and actors. About 110,000 people have paid up to $77.50 for seats at the seven performances through next week at Earl’s Court Arena in London. An opera spokeswoman said Bumbry--who went on in spite of her affliction--was very upset at having to abandon the performance.
