Local News in Brief : Council Seeks Triathlon Inquiry

The City Council has ordered an administrative review of a $100,000 expenditure by the Port of Los Angeles for a triathlon that was later canceled.
The council unanimously approved Councilman Nate Holden’s call for the review. The event, which had been scheduled for Oct. 2, was canceled when organizers failed to raise $200,000 in private donations.
Holden criticized the port for spending $10,000 of the $100,000 on a party to promote the event. “They come out with a $10,000 cocktail party!” Holden said. “They could have had coffee, tea and milk or nothing.”
Port officials could not be reached for comment.
The councilman said he hopes the event eventually will be held, with a private group as the sponsor.
The city administrative officer, city attorney and the chief legislative analyst will conduct the probe.
