HOF, West Germany — An East German family used a tractor to crash through a border fence, then scaled a ladder over a second barrier to reach the West, police said.
The escape north of this Bavarian city apparently surprised border guards, who did not shoot, police said. They would not identify the family, which included a 30-year-old man, his 26-year-old wife and two sons aged 3 and 4. The family brought the ladder with them on the tractor, police said.
