SAN FRANCISCO — Officials were investigating the death of a San Francisco police officer shot by a colleague while the two Thursday were examining a .357 magnum to see if the weapon had been altered to make it fire with a lighter than usual touch.
Officer James Bloesch, 37, died Tuesday after the shooting incident at the San Francisco police patrol stables locker room. Officer Robert Mahoney was passing the snub-nosed gun to Bloesch when it fired a single shot and struck him in the head.
The two officers, longtime friends, were checking the gun for Bloesch’s brother-in-law, paramedic Steven Ager, who bought it six years ago from a police officer.
