At Least, Michael Spinks Checks Out With Class

Earl Gustkey’s comments (July 30) regarding Michael Spinks’ retirement press conference were especially unfortunate and shallow.
Gustkey most likely prefers the memory of the last fights of Joe Louis, Muhammad Ali, et al. The quick knockout was due to Spinks’ unfortunate but gallant decision to fight Tyson, not run from him.
This does not lessen Spinks’ ring accomplishments nor his right to have earned a large purse. He would still be a viable opponent, given the current heavyweight crop.
More important, Michael Spinks brought a ton of class to a business virtually devoid of same. His quiet dignity, introspection and wry humor were a constant delight. Who will replace him?
