WASHINGTON — The House today approved by a huge 366-40 margin a proposed agreement with Canada to eliminate all cross-border tariffs on trade over the next 10 years.
The agreement, which still needs approval by the Senate as well as by Canada’s Parliament, could become effective as early as next Jan. 1. Canadian opposition parties are trying to force a general election over the issue by claiming Canadians might face cultural and economic domination under free trade with the United States, which has 10 times Canada’s population.
