10-Block Area Evacuated After Series of Explosions

GLOUCESTER, Mass. — A rapid-fire series of subterranean explosions blew off manhole covers and ripped up yards in this coastal city Friday, forcing officials to evacuate hundreds of residents from a 10-block area. There were no immediate reports of injuries. The explosions apparently were caused by gasoline in the sewer system, fire officials said.
