Engleman Wins 14th Stage of Race

SUPERIOR, Colo. — Mike Engleman of the Wheaties-Schwinn Team was part of an early breakaway and held on through 106 miles despite heat and gusting winds Saturday to win the Morgul-Bismarck Circuit Road Race, the 14th stage of the men’s Coors International bicycle race.

Davis Phinney, the overall leader, finished fourth, increasing his lead to 1 minute 49 seconds over 7-Eleven teammate Andy Hampsten, who moved into second place with a fifth-place finish. Seven-Eleven’s Alex Stieda was third, 2:22 behind Phinney heading into today’s final stage--the University of Colorado-Boulder Circuit Race.

In women’s competition, Katrin Tobin of the U.S. Olympic team pedaled past Denmark’s Karina Skibby with about 2 miles to go to win the 53-mile Morgul-Bismarck Circuit Road Race, the sixth stage for the women.

The finish left the top overall standings intact, with Inga Benedict of the U.S. Olympic team leading.
