Manassas, Va., was a mass of activity Sunday. Hundreds of men dressed in Civil War uniforms reenacted the famous Second Battle of Manassas--fought Aug. 29-30, 1862--while members of the Save the Battlefield Coalition began a 60-hour vigil in a bid to stop the proposed construction of a regional shopping mall and office complex next to the Manassas National Battlefield Park. Confederate leader David Morse of Lanham, Md., said: “We’re not perpetuating war, but we are perpetuating history here. The battle of Manassas was one of the bloodiest ... in which Americans fought against Americans.” Meanwhile, despite efforts in Congress to halt the building of the mall and office complex, construction planning goes on.
