Local News in Brief : Torrance to Help Pay for Rail Study
- Share via
The Torrance City Council has agreed to spend $46,700 to help finance a study to determine the route of a future South Bay light-rail line from El Segundo to the edge of the Palos Verdes Peninsula.
The cost of the $140,000 study will be shared by the Los Angeles County Transportation Commission and three cities along the rail route.
The study will refine the route from El Segundo, where the Century Freeway light-rail line will end. The route is expected to follow the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railway right of way from El Segundo to Lawndale and then south on an elevated track along Hawthorne Boulevard.
There is no guarantee that the construction project will be financed until the late 1990s, because the commission has determined that rail extensions to the San Fernando Valley and Pasadena have higher priorities.
The Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce urged council members to take a leadership role in making light rail a reality.
