Presidential Battle ‘Most Superficial’ He’s Seen: Cuomo

QUANTICO, Va. — New York Gov. Mario M. Cuomo said today that the presidential campaign between Democrat Michael S. Dukakis and Republican George Bush is the “most superficial” he’s ever seen and he blamed Bush.
Cuomo, a Democrat, said Dukakis has tried to discuss issues on the campaign trail and he blamed the Republicans for being the negative campaigners so far.
“What are the issues so far? Pledge of Allegiance, furloughs, death penalty. Are you kidding?” Cuomo said on a flight from Albany, N.Y., to Quantico, Va. “This is so far the most superficial (campaign), and it is because Republicans have made it that way. The Republicans are not talking about any big issues so far.”
“It’s a mean campaign,” he said, but added that he thought it will become “great fun” once the campaign takes off in earnest after Labor Day.
