Trail foLlows Rio Hondo Wash from El Monte to Whittier Narrows, beginning just west of Peck Road near Embree Dr. It heads southwest to Santa Anita Ave./Valley Blvd., then west until the northwestern section of the Narrows. Here the trail veers west and parallels the Pomona Freeway back to the Wash, ending at Rosemead and San Gabriel Blvds. east of the channel.
East of this path, the Whittier Narrows Trail circles Legg Lake. Enter the Narrows trail from the parking lot at the Southern end of Legg Lake near Durfee Road. This hard, dirt path is a nice way to add 3.5 miles to the Rio Hondo Trail.
There are small parks along the Rio Hondo Trail and recreational facilities in the Narrows comprise golfing, shooting, nature and craft centers, and an equestrian park. The park is open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. and offers food and restrooms.
