PREP FOOTBALL : Pacific Coast League : Passing Combination Sparks Orange

Orange High School’s combination of Scott McMahon to Erik McKay proved too much for Laguna Beach Friday night in a Pacific Coast League football game at Laguna Beach.
McMahon completed 10 of 16 passes for 172 yards and 2 touchdowns. Seven passes and both touchdowns went to McKay in the Panthers’ 28-3 victory. McKay wound up with 150 yards receiving.
Leading only 7-3 at halftime, the Panthers (2-5, 1-1) broke the game open with 3 touchdowns in the third quarter. On the Artists’ first play from scrimmage in the second half, Orange linebacker Mike Banville recovered a fumble at the Laguna Beach 30. Six plays later, running back Richard Valenzuela scored from the 3 with 9:25 left in the quarter.
On the Artists’ next possession, cornerback Jason Bennett intercepted an Aaron Scheid pass at the Laguna Beach 25 and ran untouched into the end zone, making it 21-3 with 8:09 left in the quarter.
After a short drive, the Artists (1-5-1, 1-1) were forced to punt. McMahon and McKay hooked up on a 72-yard touchdown play with 3:48 left in the third.
Jason Crabbe kicked a 45-yard field goal with 34 seconds left in the first half for Laguna Beach’s only points.
