Coming Down Homestretch

Democratic presidential candidate Michael S. Dukakis was greeted by a large crowd of sign-waving supporters at a noon rally Monday outside Horton Plaza in downtown San Diego. (Please see story in Part I, Page 1.) “The Republicans are popping open their champagne bottles in their penthouses, but they’re a little too early,” Dukakis told the crowd, referring to polls placing him behind Republican candidate George Bush. “We’re the ones who are going to be celebrating on Nov. 8.” The candidate said vigorous campaigning and party drives to get voters to the polls will close the gap. A variety of local and state Democrats were on hand for the campaign stop, including San Diego City Councilmen Bob Filner and Wes Pratt, Assemblywoman Lucy Killea, State Sen. Wadie Deddeh, Rep. Jim Bates and Sen. Alan Cranston.
