Tennis Roundup : Lendl and Wilander Both Lose in European Tournaments

Top-seeded Ivan Lendl, playing his first match following minor shoulder surgery two months ago, was upset, 6-2, 6-2, Thursday by Israel’s Amos Mansdorf in a second-round match of the $1-million European Community tennis tournament at Antwerp, Belgium.
John McEnroe beat Dutchman Michiel Schapers, 6-4, 6-2.
Dan Goldie eliminated Mats Wilander, the world’s No. 1-ranked player, 6-1, 6-4, to reach the quarterfinals of the $642,500 Stockholm Open-Scandinavian tennis tournament at Stockholm.
Boris Becker of West Germany downed Johan Kriek, 6-2, 6-0.
Zina Garrison and Patty Fendick overwhelmed their British opponents to give the United States a 2-0 lead in the best-of-7 Wightman Cup matches at London.
Garrison opened defense of the trophy with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Jo Durie. Then Fendick defeated Monique Javer, 6-2, 6-1.
Top-seeded Martina Navratilova routed Susan Sloane, 6-1, 6-2, in the $300,000 New England Virginia Slims tournament at Worcester, Mass., but Pam Shriver, was upset, 1-6, 7-6, 7-5, by Stephanie Rehe.
Stan Smith made quick work of Roscoe Tanner, 6-2, 6-1, in the opening round of the $40,000 Prudential-Basche Grand Champions 35-and-over tournament at the Rancho San Clemente Tennis and Fitness Club.
