I enjoyed Barbara Hansen’s article, “Seeing Portugal in India” (Oct. 16). I relaxed in Goa in ’85 and ’86 and found it among the most pleasant states of irksome India, along with Kerala and Kashmir. English is widely spoken and published, but very little Portuguese. Avoid the monsoon season. Before visiting, read “India--A Travel Survival Kit” from Lonely Planet.
Vagator Beach has a nice resort by the sea and old colonial ruins. Cottages under coconut palms suitable for middle-class families. European budget travelers (called “hippies” by the Indians) live in nearby villages and walk to a de facto nude beach. Tropical.
