Napoleon Kaufman rushed 17 times for a game-high 171 yards and a touchdown as Lompoc built a 16-point lead at halftime and held on to eliminate Notre Dame, 23-12, Friday night in a first-round Division VII game at Notre Dame.
Trailing, 16-0, Notre Dame (8-3), the San Fernando Valley League champion, pulled to within 16-6 on Scott Chiu’s 3-yard touchdown run on its first possession of the second half.
On Notre Dame’s next possession, however, a 7-yard scoring pass from Greg Andrachick to Matt Henry was nullified because of a penalty.
Lompoc (5-6), which finished third in the Northern League, scored twice within a 2 1/2-minute span in the second quarter to take the decisive halftime lead. On both drives, Lompoc needed only 3 plays to score.
The Braves’ first touchdown came on Daymon Tullis’ 7-yard run with 4:40 left in the half. The score was set up by a 22-yard run by Kaufman.
Two minutes later, Kaufman took a screen pass from Jason Garife and dashed 55 yards for the touchdown.
Andrachick completed 13 of 29 passes for 207 yards and rushed for 35 yards and a touchdown.
Tailback Errol Small, Notre Dame’s leading rusher, did not play because of a shoulder injury.
