UPTON, Mass. — Two young couples died of carbon monoxide poisoning as they slept in a car that had become stuck in mud on a state forest trail, authorities said.
The four were found dead Saturday morning. Authorities said they apparently had decided to spend the night in the car and kept the engine running to provide heat, but mud had clogged the exhaust pipe so that fumes were forced into the passenger compartment.
