Consumer activists, responding to controversial new studies showing birth control pills may increase younger women’s chances of developing breast cancer, called on the government to revise labeling of the pill. “Current doctor and patient labeling on the birth control pill is at least seven years out of date and gives the more than 6 million American women currently using the pill a false sense of security with respect to the issue of the relationship between the birth control pill and breast cancer,” said Dr. Sidney Wolfe of Public Citizen’s Health Research Group. Wolfe is among those scheduled to testify today at a Food and Drug Administration hearing called to examine four new studies that have raised questions about breast cancer risk from the pill.
