BOSTON — Sixteen more Polish fishermen jumped ship and requested political asylum in the United States as their vessel refueled outside Boston Harbor, officials said today.
It was the second defection of Polish fishermen in the city’s harbor in a week and the third in a year. The Immigration and Naturalization Service has granted visitors’ permits to the previous sailors.
The fishermen, all members of the Solidarity union, left their ship, Kantar, in two shifts Thursday afternoon. They boarded a fuel barge and were transported to a Coast Guard station. Arrangements are being made with local families for housing.
