Whirlpool Corp. said its earnings fell to $94.1 million in 1988 from $191.9 million. The Benton Harbor, Mich., company noted that its after-tax losses for 1988 from discontinued operations, including its kitchen cabinet business, were $67.2 million. In addition, the appliance maker said annual operating results were adversely affected by a warranty charge related to product sold by a former subsidiary, higher material costs not recovered through increased pricing, higher levels of interest expense and weaker results from the company’s Brazilian affiliates. Sales from continuing operations increased 4.9% to $4.3 billion.
