Stolen Rembrandt, 2nd Painting Found

THE HAGUE — Two 17th-Century paintings--including a Rembrandt--stolen nearly a year ago from a government art warehouse were retrieved Monday, a police spokesman said.
The retrieval of the two paintings, “Man With Beard” done by Rembrandt van Rijn in 1647 and the 1649 “Winter Landscape With Skaters” by his contemporary Jan van Goyen, followed the arrest of four Hague residents in an early morning raid Monday, police spokesman Nico Laterveer said.
The art works, whose value Laterveer estimated at about $700,000, were apparently stolen in April by a temporary employee, Laterveer said. The theft was not revealed until Monday.
The suspects’ search for a buyer failed “because the paintings were so well-known,” Laterveer said.
