Darryl Strawberry stayed away from spring training, was fined $750 by the New York Mets, then announced he will return today.
A day after he took a punch at co-captain Keith Hernandez, vowed to leave New York next season and walked out of camp, Strawberry failed to show for a 10 a.m. workout at Port St. Lucie, Fla. But later he said he would return.
“He’s the only one who could get away with this,” outfielder Len Dykstra said.
