Illinois Gov. James R. Thompson, a Republican, gave a lukewarm endorsement to former Democrat Edward R. Vrdolyak for mayor of Chicago, saying it is up to the public to determine who would make the city’s best chief executive. Vrdolyak, who became a Republican less than two years ago, faces Democrat Richard M. Daley and independent Timothy Evans in the April 4 general election to fill the remainder of the term of the late Harold Washington. Vrdolyak, the former chairman of Cook County’s Democratic organization, mounted a write-in campaign that won him a 1,143-vote margin over endorsed Republican Herbert Sohn in last week’s primary.
