BARSTOW — A 27-year-old Marine collapsed and died today during a three-mile run that was part of a semiannual physical fitness test, a spokesman at the Barstow Marine Logistics Center said.
The name of the Marine, who was pronounced dead at 8:40 a.m., was withheld pending notification of next of kin. According to base officials, the Marine, an eight-year veteran, was nearing the halfway point on the run when he collapsed.
Fellow Marines administered mouth-to-mouth resuscitation until the base ambulance arrived. The Marine was transferred to Barstow Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The San Bernardino County coroner’s office was to conduct an autopsy. The death is under investigation.
