Soviet Landslides Engulf 1,000 Homes

MOSCOW — Mountain landslides engulfed more than 1,000 homes in the southern Soviet Union, leaving nearly 8,000 people homeless, the government newspaper Izvestia said Monday.
It gave no details of deaths or injuries, nor did it say when the disaster happened.
The landslides were caused by unusually heavy snowfalls in the Caucasus mountains, Izvestia said. Damage was estimated in tens of millions of dollars.
The disaster occurred in the Nozhai-Yurt and Veden regions of Checheno-Ingush, an autonomous republic on the border with Soviet Georgia.
“The landslides destroyed more than 1,000 residences, and dozens of farms, schools, and clubs. Nearly 8,000 people were made homeless,” Izvestia said.
