It might be best described as the battle of the burgers with the winner receiving a whopper of a prize.
Three fast-food powerhouses--Burger King, McDonald’s and Carl’s Jr.--are vying for the exclusive right to open two restaurants at the new John Wayne Airport terminal, scheduled for completion in the summer of 1990. The burger stands are expected to bring in about $1.6 million a year, with the county receiving $200,000 annually in lease payments and taxes.
The Board of Supervisors is expected to award the burger franchise at the airport Tuesday after a public hearing on the matter at 9:30 a.m. in the Hall of Administration in Santa Ana.
Among factors that the supervisors will consider are marketing strategies of each company, the price of food, the design of the restaurants, and the percentage of women and minorities who will work there.
About 8.4 million passengers a year are expected to use the new terminal, part of a $310-million expansion of the airport. Overall, gross annual sales of food and beverages at John Wayne are expected to top $8.3 million in the new terminal by 1994. One of the largest and most lucrative concessions contracts is the burger pact.
