Three San Diego banks were robbed within an hour Wednesday morning in what police said were apparently unrelated holdups.
The first robbery was at Home Federal Savings in the 3500 block of Sports Arena Boulevard just after 10:30 a.m., according to Police Sgt. Jim Long.
The robber displayed a note demanding money and indicated he had a gun, Long said. The bandit was given money that contained a dye packet. The packet exploded as he was fleeing, coloring the cash, and the bandit abandoned it.
The second holdup took place six minutes later when a man walked into the Wells Fargo Bank in the 2700 block of Via De La Valle, produced a note demanding money and showed that he had a gun in his waistband. He fled with about $13,000, Long said.
In the third robbery, just after 11:20 a.m., a bandit escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash from the American Savings & Loan in the 1300 block of Rosecrans Street. Long said that bandit also produced a note asking for money and indicated he had a gun.
