Hermann Michael of West Germany and Yuri Simonov of the Soviet Union will replace Andre Previn on the podium of the Los Angeles Philharmonic for the four Hollywood Bowl concerts that Previn canceled at the time of his resignation as Philharmonic music director last month. Michael, a former assistant to Herbert von Karajan at the Vienna State Opera, has led Wagner productions at Seattle Opera since 1984, and is scheduled for his Metropolitan Opera debut (conducting “Die Fledermaus”) in 1989-90. He will conduct the programs of Sept. 5 and 7. Simonov, 48, was chief conductor of the Bolshoi Opera from 1970 to 1985, and has since appeared successfully in the West. He will lead the Bowl programs of Sept. 12 and 14. All four programs remain the same with one exception: Instead of Copland’s suite, “The Red Pony,” on the Sept. 5 concert, Michael will lead Rossini’s overture to “La Scala di Seta.”
