GLASGOW, Scotland — The Scottish Rugby Union today reaffirmed its decision allowing the nation’s top players to take part in 100th birthday celebrations for the sport in South Africa.
The organization also said it would be “exceedingly unfair” if participation by Scottish, English and other British Commonwealth players in the South African tour led to trouble for next winter’s Commonwealth Games.
Anti-apartheid groups have threatened protests aimed at the games, scheduled for Auckland, New Zealand, in January and February of 1990. Rugby is not on the Commonwealth Games schedule.
