A 25-year-old Costa Mesa man was fatally injured Sunday evening when his speeding vehicle struck another car and veered out of control, crashing into a light standard.
Witnesses told police that the 1986 Hyundai Excel driven by Keith Edward McCarthy was traveling at 80 to 100 m.p.h. northbound on Fairview Road in Costa Mesa when it clipped the left rear of another northbound vehicle, according to Sgt. Robert Ballinger. McCarthy apparently lost control of his vehicle and skidded into the light pole.
McCarthy was pronounced dead at Fountain Valley Hospital. The driver of the other vehicle, Louise Litka, 38, of Anaheim, was uninjured.
