Carlos Monzon, former middleweight champion, was convicted of homicide in the February 1988 death of his longtime companion, Alicia Muniz.
Monzon, 47, was sentenced to 11 years in prison and ordered to pay court costs and $25,000 to Muniz’s family. He won the middleweight title on May 7, 1970, from Italy’s Nino Benvenuti, and defended it 14 times before retiring in 1977.
An appeal is possible to the Supreme Court of Buenos Aires Province. Monzon, present at the reading of the sentence, did not say whether he intended to do so.
