NEW YORK — Gene Gotti, brother of Gambino mob boss John Gotti, was sentenced today to 50 years in prison for running a multimillion-dollar drug ring.
U.S. District Judge John R. Bartels ignored defense lawyers’ appeals for mercy in handing down the maximum sentence. “I have my obligations,” he said.
Co-defendant John Carneglia was also given 50 years and both were fined $75,000 each. Gotti, 42, and Carneglia, 44, were found guilty May 23 of being at the center of a major heroin trafficking ring. Authorities describe Gotti as a capo or captain in the Gambino crime family and Carneglia as a soldier in the organization.
