An Ensenada man was booked on suspicion of attempted murder after he wounded a Redondo Beach police officer in an exchange of gunfire near the beach early Thursday morning, Redondo Beach Police Lt. Jeff Cameron said.
Two officers spotted Jose Martinez apparently trying to break into a vehicle on the city’s Esplanade at 3:40 a.m., Cameron said.
Martinez, who later gave his occupation as a self-employed fisherman, fled when Sgt. Mark Klempa and Officer Michael Clifton approached him, Cameron said. After a brief chase, he said, Martinez turned and fired a handgun at the officers, wounding Clifton. The officers returned the fire and Martinez, who was not hit, then surrendered.
