Vice President Dan Quayle will be the keynote speaker Oct. 17 at Big Brothers of San Diego County’s annual fund-raising dinner in Mission Valley.
“We anticipate that he will bring congratulations from President and Mrs. Bush, the current honorary co-chairs of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America,” a San Diego public relations spokesman said.
Nearly 500 people are expected to attend the organization’s largest event held this year at the Town & Country Hotel.
After Quayle’s address, Big Brothers will present its Man of the Year Award to Charles R. Cono, partner and owner of Hanken Cono Assad & Company, Inc., a San Diego real estate firm.
Big Brothers of San Diego and its affiliated Sisters program have been in the business, for 28 years, of matching children of single-parent families with adults who volunteer their time and emotional support.
In San Diego, about 60,000 children live with only one parent, and that number is increasing by 30% each year, said Joseph De Cristofaro, executive director of Big Brothers of San Diego.
