WESTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE ROUNDUP : Detmer Leads BYU Over Colorado State

Ty Detmer, the nation’s leading passer, threw for three touchdowns and ran for another in leading No. 25 Brigham Young to a 45-16 Western Athletic Conference victory over Colorado State Saturday at Fort Collins, Colo.

Before leaving midway through the fourth quarter, Detmer led the Cougars to a 38-16 margin, connecting on a four-yard toss to Smith in the opening seconds of the second quarter for BYU’s first touchdown.

Detmer, whose 163.3 rating led major college rankings going into the game, ran seven yards for a touchdown later in the second quarter after he was almost trapped 18 yards behind the line of scrimmage.

Detmer completed 20 of 38 for 338 yards. His 369 yards per game coming into the game was second-best in the nation.

Also, BYU kicker Jeff Chaffetz had four field goals, two of them from outside 40 yards. “Other than the Freedom Bowl, this is the best game I have had,” Chaffetz said. “I strung ‘em together today. I’m back on track.”

BYU improved to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in WAC action. Colorado State fell to 2-4-1 and 1-2.

Wyoming 45, Utah 24--Dabby Dawson scored on runs of 68 and 33 yards as the Cowboys defeated the Utes in a WAC game at Laramie, Wyo.

Dawson, who finished with 140 yards, scored on the game’s second play by dashing 68 yards down the right sideline.

The play opened Wyoming’s biggest offensive display of the season and overshadowed a 374-yard passing performance by Utah’s Scott Mitchell, who went over the 8,000-yard passing mark for his career.

The win improved Wyoming to 2-5 and 2-2; Utah is 2-5, 1-2.

UTEP 26, New Mexico 7--Scooter Meniffee rushed for 142 yards, including a 70-yard run that set up a touchdown, to lead the Miners to a WAC win at El Paso, Tex.

The homecoming win kept Texas El Paso out of the conference cellar. The Miners, 2-5 overall, are 1-2 in the WAC. New Mexico is 1-6 and 0-4.

Dominick Cefalone kicked field goals of 45, 30 and 35 yards.

The Miners’ other scores came on quarterback Howard Gasser’s 53-yard pass play to Reggie Barrett and Creg Evans’ nine-yard run.
