A. H. Robins Co.: The pharmaceuticals company said third-quarter profit fell 50% from a year ago to $12 million as sales rose 3% to $264.3 million. The Richmond, Va., company laid the earnings decline to a higher effective income tax rate resulting from charges for the writeoff of goodwill and certain other assets of $19.2 million and $10 million, respectively, that are not deductible for income tax purposes.
