WORLD IN BRIEF : AFGHANISTAN : Rebel Blockade of Highway Broken

Afghan government troops used a devastating missile attack to wrest control of the vital Salang Highway from guerrillas who had closed the road for nine days. About 100 trucks carrying food later arrived in Kabul, the Afghan capital. The threat of ambush by moujahedeen rebels had left more than 1,000 trucks carrying vital supplies stranded in the north of Afghanistan for more than a week. A government spokesman claimed that more than 200 rebels had been killed by Soviet-built Scud missiles launched from bases near Kabul.
