U.S. Boxing Gold Medalist to Enter Clinic

LAS VEGAS — Kennedy McKinney, gold medalist for the United States in the 1988 Olympic Games at Seoul, will enter a drug rehabilitation clinic for the second time in three months, the featherweight boxer’s promoter said Saturday.

McKinney, 23, made arrangements Friday to check into a Las Vegas clinic Monday for a 60-day stay, said Akbar Muhammad, vice president of Top Rank Inc.

McKinney has admitted spending a week in a Las Vegas clinic in August for treatment of cocaine use.

“It’s a real serious problem,” Muhammad said. “I think Kennedy realizes that he is having a difficult time, much more so than he thought he would.”

McKinney has a record of 5-0-1 since turning professional, but in his last two bouts since August, he was held to a draw and got a split-decision win.
