GTE to Close Plants, Cut Jobs: GTE Corp., in a move to reduce excess capacity and reduce costs, said it will close two manufacturing plants in Massachusetts and 17 warehouses across the country, eliminating nearly 900 jobs. GTE’s incandescent lamp factory in suburban Salem, Mass., will be closed over the next year to 18 months, putting 555 employees out of work. Its lighting plant in Fall River, Mass., where 73 workers will be cut, will close next May, the company said. The first workers probably will be laid off in January, said Richard H. Dowhan, a GTE spokesman. GTE’s operation in Hayward, Calif., will be among the warehouses closed.
