MADRID — Police today arrested former European heavyweight boxing champion Alfredo Evangelista for possession of cocaine, a police spokesman said.
The spokesman said a police patrol arrested the 34-year-old, Uruguayan-born Evangelista and two women early today in a central Madrid street after they saw him throw down a vial. Police say the vial contained nine grams of cocaine.
In May, 1977, Evangelista, then European champion, fought champion Muhammad Ali in Landover, Md., for the world heavyweight title. Ali won a 15-round decision. Evangelista has not been active since 1987.
